LEGO Astro Bot Quick Look: First Impressions of Set 40899
The LEGO Astro Bot quick look verdict is in, and this little brick-built robot punches well above its 276-piece count. Officially revealed as set number 40899, this 18+ gift-with-purchase set captures the cheeky blue-and-white PlayStation mascot created by Team Asobi with surprising accuracy. Below is a video walkthrough covering the full reveal and hands-on impressions.
Video Highlights:
- Set 40899 includes 276 pieces and stands over 20 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 7 cm deep
- Available as a gift with purchase alongside the LEGO PlayStation 1 set from October 1, 2026
- Features fully posable arms and head, plus swappable eyes for expressive display
- Includes translucent blue hover beams, a printed Astro Bot logo sign, and the blue "Captain Astro" cape
The biggest talking point from this first look is how faithfully the rounded LEGO elements translate the character's computer-generated design into physical form. Many builders expect LEGO sets to look "blocky," but this model leans on curved parts to feel much closer to the actual in-game mascot.
Reviewers note that the swappable eyes do the heavy lifting in conveying Astro Bot's personality — a simple solution with excellent results. Combined with the posable head and arms, the figure supports genuinely dynamic poses rather than a single static display stance.

Astro Bot's Journey from Tech Demo to LEGO Set
Understanding why this set matters requires a quick look at the character's history. Astro Bot debuted back in 2013 in The Playroom, a packed-in tech demo showcasing the PlayStation Camera and DualShock 4 controller capabilities for the PlayStation 4.
| Year | Appearance | Platform | Significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2013 | The Playroom | PS4 | Debut as tech demo character |
| 2016 | Playroom VR | PSVR | Early VR showcase title |
| 2018 | Astro Bot Rescue Mission | PSVR | Critically praised full VR platformer |
| 2024 | Astro Bot (self-titled) | PS5 | Cemented mascot status |
| 2026 | LEGO set 40899 | Physical | First official LEGO appearance |
Some collectors find it strange that a character whose history began with the PlayStation 4 is paired as a gift with the PlayStation 1 LEGO set. Many have expressed they would prefer the Astro Bot figure sold on its own — a testament to how strongly the design stands on its own merits.
